Nothing gets me more excited for warmer weather than a good citrus pucker! Now that Spring is officially here and warmer days are here I’m celebrating with these fantastically bright Citrus Sugar Cookies. Let the sunshine into your kitchen and make some for yourself!
Tools You’ll Need
- Stand mixer: I love my Kitchenaid. It’s been going strong for over 10 years! Well worth the investment if you bake a lot like me. Plus, there are a ton of different color options to choose from. I’ve always been a fan of turquoise blues so I went with Aqua Sky for mine. Get yours here.
- Baking sheets: Some people like the darker nonstick baking sheets. I personally prefer lighter colored pans like these from Nordic Ware. Get them here.
- Baking mat or parchment paper: I like to use silicone baking mats instead of parchment paper because I can wash and reuse them, but if you prefer parchment paper that works too! My favorite baking mats can be found here.
- Cookie cutters: I used a set of round cutters with various sizes, like this set here. For the wedges I just used a knife to cut the circles in half.
How to Make Citrus Sugar Cookies
To make these cookies, start by mixing together the dry ingredients (full recipe below) – flour, baking soda, cream of tartar, and salt – in a large bowl. In a separate bowl or stand mixer, cream together the butter and sugar until light and fluffy. Add in the eggs and vanilla extract, then slowly add in the flour mixture until well combined.
Now comes the fun part – adding in the citrus flavors! Divide the dough into three parts, and add in the zest and juice of one orange, two lemons, and one lime respectively. Mix each portion until just combined and form into discs, then wrap each disc in plastic wrap and chill in the refrigerator for at least two hours.
When you’re ready to bake, preheat the oven to 350 degrees and roll out the dough into your desired shapes. Place the cookies on a baking tray lined with parchment paper or a baking mat, then return the tray to the fridge while you shape the remaining dough. Keep the trays in the fridge until you’re ready to bake – this will help the cookies hold their shape.
Bake the cookies for 10-12 minutes, being careful not to let the edges brown. Once they’re done, let them cool completely on a cooling rack before decorating with your favorite royal icing.
These Citrus Sugar Cookies are sure to brighten up any day with their sunny flavors and fun colors. They’re perfect for sharing with friends and family or enjoying all by yourself with a cold glass of milk. So why not whip up a batch today and indulge in some sweet and tangy goodness?

Ingredients
- 2 1/2 cups flour
- 1/8 tsp baking soda
- 1/2 tsp cream of tartar
- 1/2 tsp salt
- 1 cup butter, softened
- 1 cup sugar
- 1 egg
- 2 tsp vanilla
Orange Cookies
- zest of 1 orange
- juice of 1/2 orange
Lemon Cookies
- zest of 2 lemons
- juice of 1/2 lemon
Lime Cookies
- zest of 1 lime
- juice of 1/2 lime
Instructions
- In a large bowl, mix together flour, baking soda, cream of tartar and salt. Set aside.
- In the bowl of a stand mixer, or in a loarge bowl with hand mixer, cream together the butter and sugar until light and fluffy.
- Add in egg and vanilla and mix until well combined.
- Add dry ingredients to the butter mixture slowly, by adding 1/3 of dry mix at a time until everything is just blended.
- Divide the dough into 3 and place in 3 seperate bowls. (I reuse the stand mixer bowl and the dry mixture bowl for less dishes to clean later).
- In one of the doughs, add orange zest and juice from 1/2 of the orange. Mix until just blended. Repeat with the other 2 doughs, using lemon for one and lime for the other.
- Form the dough into discs and wrap with plastic wrap. Place discs in the fridge for at least 2 hours.
- When ready to bake, roll out discs one at a time to 1/4 inch (or desired) thickness on a well floured surface. Cut out cookies using different sized round cookies cutters. Largest for the orange cookies and smallest for the lime cookies. Place cut out cookies onto a lined baking sheet. Place cookies back in the fridge while the oven preheats.
- Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
- Bake cookies for 10-12 mintutes, or until the middle of the cookies are set.
- Decorate with your favorite royal icing or buttercream recipe.
Notes
Try not to let the edges of the cookies brown when baking. This will cause them to dry out and loose their yummy chewiness.
