4 Easy Cookie Recipes to Make With Your Kids!

March 29, 2020 by Sydney

4 easy cookie recipes

Looking for ways to keep your kids busy while we’re all stuck at home? These 4 easy cookie recipes are perfect for getting your kids in the kitchen and teaching them how to bake! Not only is baking super fun (and tasty!) it’s also a great way for kids to practice their math skills and get some quality time together. Teach them how to double recipes, help them practice counting, even throw in some fractions! Take a break from all of the craziness that’s going on in the world right now and go make some memories with your kiddos!

Chocolate Chip Cookies

Chocolate Chip Cookies

Chocolate chip cookies may have been the first thing I learned how to bake when I was a kid. I remember sneaking the chocolate chips when my mom turned her back and taking bites of raw cookie dough (I like to live dangerously). Get your kids involved by letting them stir in the chips and scooping it into balls of dough. You can find my favorite chocolate chip cookie recipe here.

Peanut Butter & Pretzel Cookies

Peanut Butter & Pretzel Cookies

These cookies are full of sweet and salty goodness! Your kids will have a ton of fun crushing the pretzels. For this recipe I just took my favorite chocolate chip cookie recipe and swapped out the chocolate chips for 1 cup of peanut butter chips and 1 cup of crushed pretzels.

Sprinkle Cookies

Sprinkle Cookies

What kid doesn’t love sprinkles?! They’re bright, colorful and just all around fun! I found these fun rainbow sprinkles here. Have your little ones practice their colors and point out all of the different ones they see! Here’s the recipe:

Ingredients:

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 3/4 cup butter, softened
  • 1 & 1/2 cups sugar
  • 1 egg
  • 1 tablespoon vanilla
  • 1 tablespoon (or however much you like) sprinkles

Instructions:

  1. Preheat oven to 325°
  2. Add flour, baking soda and salt to a bowl. Set aside.
  3. Cream butter and sugar until light and fluffy.
  4. Add egg and vanilla. Mix until thoroughly combined.
  5. Mix in flour mixture 1/3 at a time until well combined. Stir in the sprinkles.
  6. Scoop dough into balls and chill in freezer for about 15 minutes.
  7. Bake for about 15 minutes or until slightly golden on bottom.

Cutout Sugar Cookies with Royal Icing

Sugar Cookies

I love making cutout sugar cookies. They’re the perfect way to let your creativity shine. These may be my favorite cookies to make with kids. They love picking out different cookie cutters to use and choosing what color icing to decorate with. Let them have fun! You can find tons of adorable cookie cutters online. My son is learning his letter and numbers so he loved the cookies we cut out with this number set and this little alphabet set. Of course I just had to use my favorite Texas cookie cutter. You can find it here.

I used my no-spread sugar cookie recipe with a simple royal icing:

  • 4 cups powdered sugar
  • 3 tbsp meringue powder
  • 5 tbsp water
  • 1/2 tsp vanilla
  • 1/2 tsp almond extract

Sift powdered sugar and meringue powder into the bowl of your stand mixer. Add water, vanilla and almond extract. Mix on low until stiff peaks form. I like to cover my mixer with a kitchen towel before turning it on the keep the powdered sugar snow storm at bay. Store any unused icing in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 2 weeks. Just fluff it up with your mixer when you’re ready to use it.
